Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)

  • Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) CIS is a tax scheme for self-employed construction workers in the UK. Contractors deduct 20% (if registered) or 30% (if not registered) from subcontractors’ payments and send it to HMRC as advance tax payment.

  • This helps HMRC ensure tax compliance among subcontractors. At the end of the tax year, subcontractors can claim back overpaid tax through a self-assessment tax return.

  • CIS applies only to construction-related work like builders, electricians, and plumbers.

Umbrella

  • Umbrella Company An umbrella company acts as an intermediary between a contractor (or freelancer) and their client (or recruitment agency).
  • The umbrella company employs the contractor, handling payroll, taxes, and administrative tasks.
  • The contractor submits timesheets to the umbrella company, which then processes payments, deducting taxes (PAYE), National Insurance (NI), and their service fee before paying the contractor.
  • Best for those who want simplicity and minimal admin work, as all tax responsibilities are handled by the umbrella company.
  • Contractors get employee benefits like holiday pay, sick pay, and pension contributions.

PAYE

  • PAYE (Pay As You Earn) PAYE is the standard tax system for employees in the UK, used by businesses to deduct income tax and National Insurance (NI) at source before paying wages.

  • Employers handle PAYE on behalf of HMRC and report it through Real-Time Information (RTI) submissions.

  • Used for both full-time employees and contractors working through an umbrella company.
