How to Work Successfully at Home
It is difficult to cast our memories back to pandemic times, and in many ways, it feels like a dream (or nightmare!) One positive change we can take from the pandemic is the improved flexibility in the workplace, which has continued for many workers. In 2020, almost 50% of workers were working from home, and as of 2024, 75% were travelling to work in some capacity. Contractors tend to work from home in higher numbers than permanent employees. These are some ways to work successfully at home.
Set a Routine
Although it may be tempting to crawl out of bed five minutes before your start time, it is not the best habit to get into it. You can increase productivity by sticking to the same routine you would if going to the office to work, with the bonus of using your commute time for more enjoyable activities, such as listening to music or reading.
Take a Break
If you are a contractor, you are probably used to working from home, whereas it may take longer for a permanent employee to adapt. Even if you have been working at home in some capacity since the pandemic, you can drift into bad habits. A common problem with working from home is failing to take regular breaks. You might feel you need to prove yourself to your employer as they can’t see your work, and you may overcompensate. It is vital to take breaks both to improve productivity and your well-being. A walk outside will do wonders for your well-being.
Comfort is Key
Although propping yourself up on your bed with your favourite Netflix series in the background may seem like the most comfortable way to work – it is not the most productive! However, you should do your best to ensure the right working environment. A desk, an adjustable chair, and soft lighting are just some of the elements you should consider when creating an environment to work.
Connect with Colleagues
Working from home doesn’t mean you should completely
disconnect from your colleagues. Attend scheduled video calls and message your
colleagues if you’re feeling isolated. If you are a contract worker, you may
feel even more disengaged with your colleagues, but you will benefit from
interactions with your colleagues.
