5 Ways to Kick Start Your IT Career

The UK tech industry is at the top in Europe and third globally with a market value of over $1 trillion. Within IT, there are a range of roles you might consider working in, including web development, software development, and technical support. The demand continues to grow for experienced people within the IT sector, so it can be a lucrative industry to work in. If you are considering a career in IT, these are some steps you can take to get started.

Find Your Specialism

As there are many roles within IT services, it is important to understand where your main interest lies. For instance, do you enjoy repairing computers, or are you more interested in the software side of it? If you are unsure of what interests you, you might want to test some short courses, to find out where your passion is. You may even decide to embark on a degree course to get qualifications to help you secure a new role within IT.

Working Environment

As workers are increasingly offered the opportunity to work from home or on a hybrid model, it is important to understand your expectations with your working environment. For example, network engineers need to work on-site as they maintain the company’s network, while a web designer might have greater flexibility. If the working environment is important, make sure you know about potential obstacles that might affect flexibility in the workplace.

Improve Qualifications

Tech is one of the sectors that is constantly changing, so you must regularly update your qualifications. A degree in IT is more likely to help you get in the door, but you should also embark on regular training courses. If you don’t have a degree, ensure you have completed training courses to a significant level in the field you wish to work in.

Update LinkedIn

Make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated to reflect your IT experience so that recruiters can contact you about relevant opportunities. Let people know you are looking for IT work and use your network to help you secure a role.

Seek Opportunities

It can be quite challenging to find a role within IT without experience, so if you find yourself in this predicament, make sure you let your current company know about your desires to work in IT. It is far easier to move departments, even without much experience, when you are already settled in an organisation. They may even be willing to train you, so you reach the desired level.
